Os Guinness' book helped business leaders understand that God can call a man or woman to business for the good of His Kingdom just as He can call someone to other kinds of ministry. As Os says, "The truth is not that God is finding us a place for our gifts, but that God has created us and our gifts for a place of His choosing and we will only be ourselves when we are there."
You are a business leader, wired for the place God has you. Now it's time to learn how to really "be yourself" and maximize your influence for Christ.
Years ago, Dr. Chuck Swindoll wrote a booklet entitled "The Lonely Whine of the Top Dog". The message is clear, leadership at your level cannot be done alone. You are stewarding God's company - a huge responsibility - but He's provided all of the resources you need to do it well . Relationships, wise counsel, accountability, the wisdom and experience of those who have already walked this road ... all there because God wants your leadership to honor Him, and to bring "success" however He chooses to define it.
A gray head is a crown of glory;
It is found in the way of righteousness. (Proverbs 16:31 NASB)
Throughout the bible, God uses years of life experience to prepare his children to be used in ways they could never have foreseen at the beginning of their walk with Him. Learning from the experience of others whose lives and leadership have had an impact for the Kingdom is an effective way of expanding your own skill set and base of understanding as well as allowing you to make different mistakes than those who have walked this road before.
We serve a God whose intentionality is evident from Genesis 1:1 through Revelation 22:21. He has a plan, and He will accomplish every part of it. As those made in His image, we, too, plan - and need to plan. The only caveat for us comes in acknowledging that God's plan comes first, and He has the right to make changes to ours. Once we understand that, we can expect that our intentionality will ultimately bear His fingerprints, and will have the eternal significance that exceeds our best intentions and brings honor to our Planning Partner.
The parts of Jesus' charge to all of His followers that are especially applicable to the world of business are to make disciples and to teach. Much of your time as a leader is focused on these two priorities, whether it's educating customers or raising up those who will lead the company after you or anything in between. It becomes "making disciples" when you see that teaching as having Kingdom purpose and eternal significance. Whether it's how you live your life as a leader, how you conduct your business or opportunities to intentionally develop those around you spiritually, your business can be a Great Commission Company.
Leaders like you are highly motivated and focused women and men. That's why we all need help to remember to look up every once in a while and see that we are part of something much bigger than ourselves or our companies. We are part of the Body of Christ ... part of the Kingdom of God. Taking time to see how God has positioned us and our organizations to be part of His Big Picture gives perspective on either our "success" or our challenges. It reminds us that what we are doing has eternal significance. That's a Big Picture you don't want to miss!
